A Clinical Observation of the Nephrotic Syndrome

Abstract
A clinical observation was made on 81 cases of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome occuring under the age of 15 out of 11,850 admissions to the Department of Pediatrics at Severance Hospital, Yonsei University, from May, 1956 to April, 1972.
The incidence of the nephrotic syndrome in children compries 0.7% of the total admission cases: The abe, sex of the patients, clinical symptoms and signs, laboratory findings, especially relationship of blood chemistry and urine protein, and effects of steroid and immunosuppressive drug therapy were analyzed and data were summerized as follows:
1. Th age distribution of 81 cases showed the highest incidence at the ages of 6~10 years(55.6%) and none was under the 1 year of age.
2. The sex ratio of male and female was approximatery 3:1.
3. As the initial minifestation, edema was the most common complaints(95.1%) and next were adminished urine output(59.3%), abdominal distension(51.9%), and anorexia(40.7%).
4. Concerning relationship between the urine protein and serum protein, between the urine protein and serum cholesterol, if proteinuria was massive(? or ?), serum protein level was low and serum cholesterol was high.
5. In general, steroid and immunosuppressive drug effect were good, but the treatment with steroid plus immunosuppressive drug was more effect than steroid only.
6. As the results of follw up at O.P.D., duration of follow up was most between 1 and 2 years, and recurrent cases was 68.7% in 1 year.
